You Are Here

Words & Music by Robin Frederick

I’m a longtime fan of the Swingle Singers with their unique Bach-meets-bebop musical style. So I thought I’d pay my respects with an original song blending the intricate, interwoven melodies of baroque music with the jazz stylings of the Swingles. Although the original Swingle Singers recordings had no lyrics, just the nonsense syllables of vocalese, I ended up with an offbeat love song that’s intended to be both humorous and heartfelt. I hope you enjoy it!

Vocals & Bass: Robin Frederick
Drums: Tom Walsh
Sax: Bob Sheppard

Refer to grid locations
All plans are drawn to scale
The outline of the structure rises
As the light begins to pale

Allow for variations
Let simple lines prevail
At the very center, a heartbeat
Echoing the words that never fail
YOU ARE HERE. YOU ARE HERE.

From skeletal foundations
The angled planes emerge
And slowly bone and breath ascend
To where steel beams and wind diverge
A sense of expectation
The empty space is gone
Flexibility, form, and function
Silhouetted in luminous dawn
YOU ARE HERE. YOU ARE HERE.

And stone by stone
And breath by breath
You change the skyline of heart and mind
Your endless halls and starlit roof
stairs of love, walls of fear,
doors of truth, bright rooms appear
You are here.
And breath by breath
And stone by stone
Oh, this love has grown.
