Hi Robin! I am currently reading (and using!) your book, and I just want to tell you it's wonderful! I write lyrics in English for the European market, where simplicity of language is of essence and clichés are unfortunately rampant. I love your approach of mixing poetic language with explanation (shortcut 60)! It makes creative imagery more accesable for non-native speakers. Yay!!! That's a great idea! Some of the songs I enjoy the most seem to have the most basic lyics,,, I'm always amazed at how great of a story a song with simple straight forward lyics can tell. I wanted to let you know that if you used multiple examples of a 'technique' in a song then it would make it easier to understand. For example, I didn't understand what you were talking about when you gave the rhythm count in the Beyonce song....but when you played the second song then I could hear it right away. It made a difference! I really liked how you did that. Your classes where great...you teach great material. Also, HELP! I've been attempting to do a rhythm count on Britney Spear's "Womanizer" and I can't seem to figure it out! Can you please break it down? Her rhythms are great...I just haven't gotten the hang of understanding the rhythm counts yet! (And I was 'spoonfed' the Funk growing up!) As far as counting melodies - I'd suggest starting with a few easier songs, then working your way up to the Britney Spears track. Some of the R&B/Pop songs and Dance/Pop songs get very complex. I think the best thing to do at this point would be to take the song off your web site. If someone does a Google search for "California Girl" and comes across your site, they may think that's the melody or some version of it. This could get really confusing. Look for someone who can talk about their feelings honestly and make you understand how they feel. That's the most important thing a lyric needs to do, especially a sad song. I've been writing lyrics for a few years now and I've noticed that the more I write the better I seem to get at it; at least when the end product comes around. I love going back and looking at old lyrics I've written just to give me a sense of how far I have come since then...even just looking at ones from a few months ago. Lyrics that I thought were very good now seem mediocre compared to ones I have written in recent days or weeks. However, I was wondering about something. I have always had trouble coming up with the first line of a song. It seems to be the most difficult for me. I try not to write the first line as something obvious and cliche (tho occasionally it does come out as such) but I also can't seem to figure out how to keep it from being too vague. If you have any advice on that subject I would love the input. Also, I'd like to send in one of my pieces to get your input on how you think the structure flows or just general thoughts on the writing, again if that's alright.
